Dali

I have just got back from a very hot week in Spain due the lacking blogging. I have visited the same area 3 times so I have had the opportunity to go to each of Dali's exhibition's each time I go. The first time I went to Spain we visited Dali's Theatre/Museum and Dali Jewels.

'The Dalí Theatre-Museum, the largest surrealistic object in the world, occupies the building of the former Municipal Theatre, a 19th century construction which was destroyed at the end of the Spanish Civil War. On its ruins, Dalí decided to create his museum.'

Inside is full of his paintings and his jewel collections as well as himself as he is buried inside. Here a few pictures to give you an idea what it looks like (not taken by me as I can not find the camera card they are on):

My second trip to Spain led me to visit his own house in the village, Portlligat.

'The present Portlligat House-museum was Salvador Dalí’s only fixed abode from 1930, the place in which he normally lived and worked up till 1982 when, upon Gala’s death, he took up residence at Púbol Castle.'

I have to admit this was the best out of the three. It felt so lived in and comfortable yet still surreal. All the furniture is still fully intact and even unfinished paintings were scattered to show when he left after his wife's death he left it untouched. Again these pictures are not my own as I cant find them!

So my last Dali encounter was his country retreat castle in Pubol.

'The Gala Dalí Castle in Púbol, open to the public since 1996, allows visitors to discover a medieval building in which Salvador Dalí lent material form to an exuberant creative effort with his mind set on one person, Gala.'

This was sort of a let down after the other extreme museums. As it was sorely used for Gala, his wife, he lowered the tone and it almost looked normal inside. Everything had a muted tone to it and was quite simple for a surrealist. In the basement is where Gala was buried and he made a tomb for himself in there but never ended up next to her. Inside here it was very peaceful and calm except the giant giraffe and elephant looking over her..

Also inside was a collections of some of Gala's outfits. Here are a few pictures that I took:

If you ever get to visit the Costa Brava make sure these are at the top of your list! Hopefully I will be blogging more and Im going to London this weekend so look out for new posts!
